As any significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
