Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying these drugs must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
