Colombia's President Warns 'I Will Resort to Weapons Once More' if US Launches an Attack.

Donald Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have turned up the volume of their exchange, further raising tensions bilaterally after US forces attacked Venezuela to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs narcotics facilities and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump remarked.

Escalating Threats and Allegations

Talking to reporters on Sunday, Trump hinted at similar use of force against Bogotá, stating the country is “very sick too” and governed by a sick man involved in producing cocaine and selling it to the US."

While Colombia remains the world’s largest source of the narcotic, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the business.

A Frayed Alliance

The country has long been a key ally of Washington in the campaign against drug trafficking and received wide political approval in the US capital, but relations have soured significantly after Trump came to office.

Colombia’s drug trade is predominantly run by criminal organizations like the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members demobilised following a landmark accord.

The President's Firm Response

Upon being questioned if a military operation like that in Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that to me."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the 1990s, rejected these allegations. "I am not illegitimate and certainly not a drug trafficker," he declared.

"The US president speaks without information. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a post.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And if they detain the president, which many of the country holds in high esteem, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the people," the president cautioned.

From Fighter to President

The president dedicated some years as a young man as a member with the radical M-19 armed organization but is not believed he did not participated in combat. After demobilizing, he took part in drafting the nation's constitution over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He served as mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I swore not to touch a gun ... but in defense of my country I shall resume the fight," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Petro's personal security had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump's stance, but voices spanning the political spectrum have rejected the notion of an invasion targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Strains

American authorities withdrew Petro’s visa subsequent to he called on US military personnel to ignore orders that violate law. In October, it placed asset freezes against the president, his spouse and various associates.

Concurrently as the US increased its forces in the region and striking suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted attacks against vessels in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
